UAE-based Green Metal Industries (GMI) has cast its first billet at its facility in Khalifa Economic Zones Abu Dhabi (KEZAD), marking a production milestone for its integrated steel, pipe and tube complex.
The first heat was tapped and the billet cast using domestically sourced scrap, with the steel melted and poured in the UAE, according to CEO Sameer S Sharma’s LinkedIn post. GMI also plans to supply commercial-quality billets to existing local mills, complementing their operations rather than competing with them.
The first phase involves an investment of close to USD 250 mln and includes a meltshop with an annual capacity of 1.2-1.4 mln tons. GMI targets monthly output of around 70,000 tons by the end of Q4 2026, increasing to 100,000-120,000 tons by mid-2027. Commissioning of the second phase is expected in mid-2027.
The integrated complex is designed to combine steelmaking, casting and rolling with pipe and tube production. The project is intended to supply specialty and alloy steel grades that are currently imported into the UAE.
GMI also intends to operate the facility as a net-zero site. Sharma said the company would publish its emissions scopes, targets and verification pathway once these could be audited.
KEZAD announced the project in March 2024 as a special steel recycling and production facility. The original plan included scrap melting, refining, continuous casting and rolling facilities.
