US Steel Kosice modernizes hot strip mill

US Steel Kosice has recently completed a comprehensive one-year testing phase of the latest Danieli UHP hard-faced pinch rolls, which are deployed in the downcoiler area of the hot-strip mill located in Kosice, Slovakia.

Right from the outset, the cladded rolls supplied by Danieli Service have demonstrated exceptional performance, surpassing that of the original surface-hardened steel rolls by a significant margin. In fact, after a standard campaign of 14,000 coils (equivalent to approximately 230,000 tons or 8,000 km of strip), a minimal roll wear of only 1.8 mm in diameter was recorded, compared to the standard wear of 5.5 mm.

This remarkable outcome can be attributed to the innovative composition of the UHP hard-facing material developed by Danieli engineers, which exhibits a high concentration of carbides. By employing Danieli’s roll-cladding technology, US Steel Kosice has achieved reduced wear, minimized maintenance time, and decreased roll grinding requirements in their mill roll shop.

Moreover, the cladding technology provided by Danieli Service significantly lowers the total cost of ownership through a tripled reduction in wear and the option of roll re-cladding once the rolls reach the minimum diameter. This approach not only contributes to cost savings but also reduces the environmental impact when compared to the manufacturing process of new cast or forged rolls.
