BHP posts record iron ore output in FY23 YoY

BHP Group reported its highest-ever annual iron ore production in FY23, despite challenges posed by Tropical Cyclone Ilsa. The success can be attributed to the strong performance of its South Flank operations in Western Australia, which continued to ramp up despite the adverse weather impacts.

In a press release, the company stated that Western Australia Iron Ore (WAIO) registered record shipping volumes due to enhanced productivity in its supply chain, rail network, and car dumpers. Furthermore, South Flank successfully deployed autonomous haul trucks in May, and the operation is on track to achieve full production capacity within the next 12 months.

The June quarter saw a notable 9pct increase in iron ore production compared to the previous quarter, amounting to 65.3 mln tons. Additionally, the full-year production for the 12-month period ending in June reached 257 mln tons, reflecting a 1pct rise YoY.

Looking ahead, BHP Group anticipates Western Australia’s iron ore output for fiscal year 2024 to range between 282 mln and 294 mln tons.
