SIJ halts stainless steel unit after accident

Slovenska Industrija Jekla (SIJ), a Slovenian steel producer, has halted production at its stainless steel unit, SIJ Acroni, following an accident at its hot rolling mill.

According to a statement by SIJ, on July 13, a major incident occurred, resulting in significant damage to the main engine of the rolling frame at SIJ Acroni’s hot rolling mill.

As a consequence, a crucial part of production will be temporarily suspended, likely lasting up to three months. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries during the incident.

SIJ stated in a filing with the Ljubljana Stock Exchange that this event will lead to considerable economic repercussions for the operations of the SIJ Group. However, the company reassured that there are no plans for employee layoffs, and they expect to fulfill their commitments on time despite the production disruption.

SIJ – Slovenian Steel Group is one of the leading producers of stainless steel and special steels in Europe. The company produces stainless steel quarto plates, alloyed tool steels (rolled and forged products), special steels (high-strength and wear-resistant steels) and non-oriented electrical plates. The SIJ Group also produces high value-added finished products such as industrial knives, rolls and cold-drawn bars.
