SSAB and K-Tec partner to introduce fossil-free steel in earthmoving equipment

SSAB has partnered with K-Tec, Canada’s premier original equipment manufacturer of heavy-duty earth scrapers, to introduce SSAB Fossil-free steel into its earthmoving product line.

As part of the K.A. Group, K-Tec takes a significant stride toward carbon emission reduction by prioritizing material selection. Embracing its role as a fossil-free partner to SSAB, K-Tec gains access to pilot deliveries of SSAB Fossil-free steel, renowned for its near-zero carbon dioxide emissions from the steelmaking process. Initially, this steel will be integrated into K-Tec’s flagship products catering to the construction and mining sectors.

This collaborative effort marks K-Tec’s latest endeavor to mitigate emissions and enhance sustainability for its clientele. Leveraging SSAB’s Hardox wear steel and Strenx performance steel brands, the company has already made significant strides in designing, manufacturing, and delivering robust yet lightweight earthmoving equipment.

As a frontrunner in premium steels, SSAB aims to revolutionize steelmaking by achieving virtually zero carbon dioxide emissions throughout the process. The pilot deliveries of SSAB Fossil-free steel leverage the innovative HYBRIT technology, a collaborative effort between SSAB, iron ore producer LKAB, and energy company Vattenfall. This groundbreaking approach replaces traditional coking coal with fossil-free electricity and green hydrogen, resulting in water as a by-product instead of carbon dioxide emissions.
