LKAB Partners with NCC and Peab for carbon-free sponge iron production

LKAB, an international mining group, is deepening its strategic partnerships with leading Swedish construction companies as it prepares for a significant expansion and transformation of its business operations.

The company has entered into long-term strategic collaboration agreements with NCC and Peab, focusing on the launch of carbon-free sponge iron production in the Swedish orefields. These agreements encompass both the establishment of new facilities and collaborative development efforts.

LKAB is embarking on one of Sweden’s most extensive industrial projects, centered around the development of carbon-free sponge iron production. This initiative requires substantial expertise, logistical capabilities, and strong leadership.

The enhanced collaboration with Peab involves a declaration of intent linked to a construction contract for LKAB’s planned hydrogen facility at the Hybrit demonstration plant, encompassing infrastructure, foundation work, and port facilities in Lulea.

Similarly, the strategic partnership between LKAB and NCC includes a declaration of intent concerning a direct reduction plant and associated infrastructure in Gallivare. Planning activities have already commenced, facilitating the pooling of expertise, information, and knowledge to devise practical solutions for various development projects in the Swedish orefields that LKAB intends to undertake in the coming years.
