Acciaieria Arvedi, a leading Italian steel producer, has commissioned Primetals Technologies to upgrade its two vacuum degassers (VD) at the Cremona plant, Italy, with plans for completion by the second half of 2025.
Arvedi aims to expand its product range to include electrical and ULC/IF steel grades, pioneering an electric arc furnace (EAF) – LF – VD – OB route.
The upgrade will convert the VD plants to vacuum oxygen decarburization (VOD) systems for silicon steel production, featuring advanced components like water-cooled copper-plated ladle covers and oxygen lance systems. This initiative aims to enhance efficiency, reduce maintenance needs, and improve safety at the facility, which has been operational since 1992 and currently produces four mln tons annually through EAF, LF, VD, and ESP/ISP processes.
Arvedi is Italy’s largest steel producer, specializing in carbon and stainless steel for European industrial sectors, including high-performance HSLA grades for automotive applications.
