Tosyali Holdings to establish DRI plant in Libya

Turkey’s Tosyali Holdings has signed an agreement with the Libya United Steel Company for the Iron and Steel Industry (Sulb) to establish a Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) plant in Benghazi, Libya, according to a company press release.

“With this agreement, the two companies have established a new entity called Tosyali-Sulb in Benghazi, Libya. The project, undertaken by Tosyali-Sulb, includes significant investments that will greatly contribute to the development of Benghazi’s industry, particularly the iron and steel sector, and boost employment,” Tosyali stated.

As part of this investment project, the world’s largest DRI plants, with a total capacity of 8.1 mln tons, will be constructed using Midrex Flexi DRI technology. This technology allows the plant to operate using hydrogen, a clean energy source, positioning it as a leading base for green steel production.

Investments for the first phase of the integrated iron and steel complex, with a capacity of 2.7 mln tons, will commence immediately. The plant will supply Hot Briquette Iron (HBI) to the nearby region and Europe for green steel production, Tosyali added.

Once completed, Tosyali will become the largest international supplier of HBI, the primary intermediate product essential for the green transformation process.
