Cogne Acciai Speciali has contracted Danieli Service for a modernization project at its Aosta, Italy, facility. The project will focus on revamping the cooling chamber of the continuous casting machine for special steel blooms to improve efficiency and ease maintenance.
The intervention includes installing a new stainless steel cooling chamber in the mobile curved zone to cover the wet zone affected by secondary sprays. This design will reduce the volume of saturated air to be aspirated, leading to significant electricity savings for the fans (approximately 60pct compared to the pre-revamping configuration) and a notable reduction in maintenance time.
The new chamber will be pre-assembled at Danieli workshops for quick installation. A new central structure will support all fixed curved sections of the caster, featuring new roller modules, heat containment hoods, and extraction guides for operational stirrers across various casting lines.
With all mechanical components located outside the wet zone, maintenance will be simpler and more effective, extending the lifespan of the components. The support structure of the oscillating benches will also be optimized for better performance. The upgrade will be completed during a four-week summer shutdown.
