Tata Steel Nederland has selected Primetals Technologies to provide a pellet pot testing facility for its pilot plant in IJmuiden, the Netherlands. Primetals will design, supply, and implement the equipment, including a comprehensive electrical and automation solution, with the facility set to start up in mid-2025.
The new pellet pot will enhance capacity and autonomous operation, building on Primetals’ existing pellet pot concept used in Leoben, Austria. It will support up to six pot grate tests per day and 500 annually, featuring an off-gas analysis system for emission insights.
Vincent Ritman, Tata Steel R&D director, highlighted the facility as a major investment that will link the pellet plant with future direct reduction processes, producing high-quality pellets for research. This aligns with Tata Steel Nederland’s goals to cut CO2 emissions by 40pct by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2045, involving a shift to gas and hydrogen-based ironmaking and electric arc furnace steelmaking.
The facility will ensure optimal raw material mixes and process parameters, supporting Tata Steel Nederland’s transition to advanced steel production technologies.
