Jindal Steel & Power upgrades blast furnace with hydrogen injection technology

Jindal Steel and Power has contracted Primetals Technologies to engineer a new Hydrogen-Bearing Syn-Gas Injection System and provide site advisory services for installation and commissioning. This system will integrate with Primetals Technologies’ existing Level 2 automation solution.

By substituting some traditional carbon fuels with hydrogen, Jindal Steel and Power aims to cut CO2 emissions from its blast furnace. The system will use surplus syn-gas from the on-site coal gasification plant, reducing the carbon fuel rate and lowering operating costs.

The new system will be installed in Blast Furnace No. 1 at Jindal Steel and Power’s Angul plant, which Primetals Technologies originally designed and commissioned in 2017. Jindal Steel and Power recently achieved a record daily output of over 12,000 tons with this furnace.

This order highlights Primetals Technologies’ role as a leading blast furnace technology provider and its ability to enhance furnace performance while reducing emissions. Jindal Steel and Power, a major steel producer in India with a turnover exceeding USD 7.6 bln, is known for its high-quality products and innovative technologies. Its diverse product range, including long products, rails, and flat products, is exported to over 22 countries.
