NMDC unveils major investment aims to boost iron ore production

NMDC, India’s leading iron ore producer, has allocated INR 2,200 crore (USD 262 mln) for FY 2025 to establish a slurry pipeline and new processing plants, targeting a production increase to 100 mln tons by 2030. Amitava Mukherjee, CMD (Additional Charge), stated that the ambitious goal integrates sustainability, aiming to boost production responsibly while minimizing environmental impact.

The expansion is driven by rising iron ore demand both domestically and internationally. Key initiatives include a 135-kilometer slurry pipeline from Bacheli to Nagarnar, and new screening plants at Kirandul and Donimalai to increase processing capacity. N

MDC is also upgrading rail capacity from 28 to 40 mln tons per year and constructing a 15-mln-tons-per-year slurry pipeline. Additional projects include a 4-mln-tons-per-year beneficiation plant at Bacheli and a 2-mln-tons-per-year pellet plant at Nagarnar, with plans for future expansion.

NMDC also plans to commence production at an 8-mln-tons-per-year coking coal block by FY26, aiming to reduce India’s reliance on imports.
