AM/NS India invests USD 119 mln in Gujarat plant for Magnelis production

ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) has invested nearly INR 1,000 crore (USD 119 mln) in its Gujarat plant to establish a production line for Magnelis, a patented flat carbon steel with a zinc-aluminium-magnesium alloy coating. This move aims to capture over 50pct of the domestic market share for steel used in solar projects.

In addition to solar applications, Magnelis will serve sectors such as road infrastructure (crash barriers), agriculture (grain silos, farm equipment), and construction (pre-engineered buildings). The new production line at AM/NS India’s Hazira plant has a capacity of 500,000 tons per annum.

AM/NS India is in advanced discussions to supply Magnelis to major players in India’s renewable energy and infrastructure sectors, including Adani Green Energy, Reliance Industries, and NTPC. Previously, this high-end steel was imported from Korea, Japan, and China, often with lengthy delivery times.

Ranjan Dhar, Director and Vice President of Sales & Marketing at AM/NS India, noted that 60-65pct of their portfolio is focused on value-added products, a proportion that will remain as they expand. The company is increasing its total capacity from 9 mln tons to 15 mln tons by early 2026. Next year, a new 2 mln-ton auto-focused cold rolling mill will also be introduced at Hazira.

Dhar emphasized that the shift towards value-added products is driven by rapidly changing demand patterns in India, particularly in automobiles and white goods. “We aim to provide high-end products that meet global benchmarks,” he added.
