Sinosteel Engineering & Technology Co., Ltd. (Sinosteel E&T) and Tenova have announced the successful performance test of Baosteel Zhanjiang Iron & Steel Co., Ltd.’s new hydrogen-based 1 mln tons per year ENERGIRON Direct Reduction (DR) plant. Located in the Zhanjiang Economic and Technological Zone in Guangdong Province, the plant was designed by Tenova with the ENERGIRON technology, developed in partnership with Danieli, and engineered by Sinosteel.
During the test, the plant produced 21,620 tons of direct reduced iron over 168 hours of continuous operation, achieving a metallization rate of over 94pct using a 70pct hydrogen-based reducing gas. The ENERGIRON technology is noted for its flexibility and sustainability, capable of using various reducing gases, including Hydrogen (H2), Natural Gas (NG), and Coke Oven Gas (COG). With a capacity of 1 mln tons per year, this plant is the largest hydrogen-based DRI facility in China. It is also designed to capture CO2 for commercial sale, reducing overall emissions and providing additional revenue.
