Tenaris has invested USD 520,000 to install an electric induction coil for the upsetting line at its TuboCaribe seamless steel pipe mill in Cartagena, Colombia, replacing a natural gas furnace.
This line, which processes an average of 24,500 tons of pipes annually, will now heat pipes in just 20 seconds instead of five minutes, cutting carbon dioxide emissions by 2,000 to 3,000 tons per year. Previously, this line consumed around 1.3 mln cubic meters of natural gas annually.
Tenaris aims to reduce its CO2 emissions intensity per ton of steel by 30pct by 2030, implementing various projects across its global production network. Plans at TuboCaribe also include installing solar panels for renewable energy. Other initiatives include a new electric arc furnace with Consteel technology at Siderca, two wind farms in Argentina, and solar projects in China, Italy, and Romania.
