SSAB and Alstom have partnered to supply steel with near-zero fossil carbon emissions. The first delivery of SSAB Zero will occur this year for Alstom’s Traxx Shunter locomotives, designed for shunting and trackwork operations.
SSAB Zero is the world’s first commercial steel made from recycled materials, produced using fossil-free electricity and biogas. By using this steel instead of traditional options, Alstom aims to significantly reduce the embodied carbon footprint of its new locomotives. The Traxx Shunter platform is compatible with hydrogen, battery, and catenary systems.
The Traxx Shunter H hydrogen locomotive, developed by Alstom, combines advanced hydrogen fuel cell and battery technologies to achieve zero direct carbon emissions.
