DSC to revamp blast furnace at Taichung plant

Dragon Steel Corporation (DSC) operates Blast Furnace No. 1 at its Taichung plant, which was originally designed, supplied, built, and commissioned by Primetals Technologies in 2010. The furnace has exceeded its capacity, achieving a record performance 15pct above its design specifications. It will be taken offline in 2025 for a revamp to prepare for another successful campaign.

As part of the revamp, DSC will replace the entire set of staves with the original design, adding ten staves featuring Primetals Technologies’ patented wear-resistant copper and anti-bending solutions in key areas. These new stave designs will enhance the reliability of the furnace cooling system, extend its campaign life, and reduce maintenance needs. The wear-resistant technology will also lower operating costs and carbon emissions by decreasing coke consumption.

Primetals Technologies will directly design and supply the bend and wear-resistant staves for the Taichung site, with its experts providing installation advisory services and performance testing.

Dragon Steel became a wholly-owned subsidiary of China Steel Corporation in 2008. As Taiwan’s only fully integrated steel plant, DSC is equipped with both an electric arc furnace and two blast furnaces, featuring the latest efficient and environmentally friendly designs. The two blast furnaces have a combined annual capacity of 5 mln tons, supplying feedstock for the adjacent steelmaking facility. Steel produced at Taichung includes general carbon steel, structural steel, and high-strength low-alloy steel, with the site also offering general structural steel with the largest hot-rolled thickness and width in the CSC Group.
