Shyam Metalics and Energy Ltd. (SMEL), an Indian steel producer, has officially launched a new blast furnace and sinter plant at its Jamuria facility, as announced in a stock exchange filing.
The project, which involved an investment of INR 600 crores (USD 71.3 mln), aims to enhance production capabilities to meet the rising demand for high-quality steel. The newly commissioned blast furnace has a capacity of 0.77 mln tons per annum and features a volume of 550 cubic meters, three top-fired stoves, modern coal dust injection technology, and a dry gas cleaning plant to optimize steelmaking.
To boost operational efficiency, the plant includes an 18 MW top gas pressure recovery turbine, which increases energy recovery by 10pct, and a specialized evaporative cooling system that reduces water and power consumption by approximately 20pct compared to conventional systems. Additionally, the facility is designed for zero process water discharge, aligning with the company’s growth strategy.
The new sinter plant, with a capacity of 1.11 mln tons per annum, will process iron ore fines into feedstock for the blast furnace, enhancing operational efficiency and lowering production costs. This plant utilizes high top pressure (1.5 bar) and high-temperature hot blast (1200 Celsius) technology to increase coal injection and energy savings, with engineering support from SDM of China.
Headquartered in Kolkata, Shyam Metalics has a diversified product portfolio that includes pellets, sponge iron, billets, ferro-alloys, and finished steel products such as rebars, wire rods, and structural steel products.
