Rebar producers achieve ECAS certification as new regulations near implementation

Local and regional steel producers, including Emirates Steel, Union Iron & Steel, Qatar Steel FZE, and Oman’s Jindal Shadeed, have recently obtained Emirates Conformity Assessment Scheme (ECAS) certification in line with new regulations set by the UAE Ministry of Industry & Advanced Technology (MoIAT). These regulations, taking effect on November 27, 2024, aim to ensure that construction steel products sold in the UAE market meet rigorous safety standards, offering the public greater confidence in product reliability.

A significant feature of the new regulation is the introduction of digital product information and traceability requirements, leading to the application of the ECAS mark. This innovation establishes a level playing field for manufacturers and makes the UAE the first country to require Digital Product Passports for steel products, facilitating a fully digitized supply chain, according to MoIAT.

Emirates Steel, part of the EMSTEEL Group and a benchmark steel producer in the UAE, was the first company to receive ECAS certification. “The certifications include the MoIAT UAE Scheme for Steel Bars for Concrete Reinforcement and the Certificate of Approval for Digital Competence – Digital Product Passport, setting a new standard for transparency and quality in steel manufacturing,” stated Emirates Steel.

Other UAE-based producers, Union Iron & Steel and Qatar Steel FZE, have also received the certification, reinforcing their commitment to quality and safety.

“With an annual production capacity of 450,000 tons, we are well-equipped to efficiently meet market demands. Our approximately 12pct market share in the UAE highlights our vital role in the regional steel industry and reflects the consistent quality and reliability of our products,” Union Iron & Steel’s CEO Dr. Musa Souri, said.

“These prestigious certifications, issued by the Ministry of Industry & Advanced Technology, demonstrate Qatar Steel Company FZE’s commitment to maintaining the highest standards of quality, safety, and sustainability in the steel manufacturing industry,” Qatar Steel FZE stated.

Oman’s Jindal Shadeed also achieved ECAS certification, ensuring its ability to continue serving the UAE market under the new regulatory framework.
