Vale and Rogesa sign iron ore pellet supply deal to drive decarbonized steel production

Vale and Roheisengesellschaft Saar mbH (Rogesa), a joint subsidiary of Dillinger and Saarstahl AG, have signed a multi-year agreement to supply iron ore pellets, a significant step toward decarbonizing steel production.

Under the agreement, Vale will provide blast furnace pellets from 2025 to 2027, with a transition to direct reduction pellets starting in 2028, timed with the launch of Rogesa’s new direct reduction plant at the Dillingen site.

The Saarland steel industry plans to use this direct reduction plant alongside electric arc furnaces to produce greener steel, replacing coking coal with hydrogen to convert iron ore into hot-briquetted iron (HBI).

Rogesa, founded in 1981 and jointly owned by Dillinger and Saarstahl AG, currently operates two blast furnaces that supply hot metal to both companies’ steel plants.
