Ovako has reached a key milestone in its sustainable steel-making journey. In the summer of 2024, the furnace at its Boxholm facility in Sweden was rebuilt to switch from oil to a more environmentally friendly oxyfuel mixture of oxygen and propane. This change reduces carbon emissions and cuts energy consumption by half.
The new fuel system also sets the stage for future use of fossil-free hydrogen, produced through water electrolysis, further enhancing environmental sustainability. This EUR 5 mln (USD 5.29 mln) investment is part of Ovako’s long-term strategy to minimize its climate footprint and promote a sustainable steel industry.
The new furnace will be inaugurated in March 2025, marking a significant step in Ovako’s commitment to responsible steel production and leadership in the industry’s green transformation.
