South African steel producer, Scaw Metals has successfully produced its first slabs and coils at its new hot-strip mill complex in Johannesburg. This brownfield investment aims to expand the company’s product portfolio to include flat products and increase production capacity.
The new vertical-curve, single-strand slab caster has begun producing slabs, which are then rolled by the hot-strip mill. These HRC will supply Barnes Group’s downstream pipe mills and other flat-product consumers.
The complex features a new reheating furnace with PHL firing logic for improved furnace flexibility, energy efficiency, and reduced emissions. Additionally, a new water-treatment plant and an advanced electric arc furnace (EAF) for melting scrap and direct reduced iron (DRI) are set to be operational in the coming months, supporting the production of green steel.
