Konepeikko to boost scrap processing with advanced torch-cutting machine

Finnish recycling provider Konepeikko Oy has awarded Primetals Technologies a contract for a new torch-cutting machine at its facility in Imatra, Finland, located at Ovako Imatra Oy Ab. This environmentally friendly solution, part of Primetals’ latest developments in scrap cutting, significantly reduces noise emissions.

The new machine positions Konepeikko to meet the growing demand for scrap in steelmaking, with the World Steel Association predicting annual scrap use will reach 1,000 mln tons in the coming years. Effective scrap management is crucial in the shift toward green steel production.

Equipped with a highly efficient dedusting system, the machine ensures dust emissions stay well within environmental limits. The machine is housed in a moveable cabin to further reduce noise, while operators control it remotely from a safe distance using a video monitoring system. Predefined cutting programs improve efficiency and reduce processing times.

The machine can cut various scrap types, including billets, blooms, and rolled bar bundles. It also integrates iron powder into the cutting process, enabling the cutting of tough materials like tundish skull and high-alloy rolls. This technology was developed by TCT Torch-Cutting Technologies, a Spanish company acquired by Primetals Technologies in August 2023. Konepeikko Oy processes over 50,000 tons of recycled materials annually, including construction waste from demolition sites.
