Govt strengthens steel imports oversight with enhanced quality control measures

The Indian government announced that 151 steel standards developed by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) have been incorporated into the Quality Control Order (QCO). Efforts are ongoing to create standards for all steel consumed in the country.

The government is also scrutinizing steel imports to prevent the entry of substandard consignments. To ensure quality in steel production, measures have been taken to establish uniform specifications, testing methods, and manufacturing processes.

Steel must comply with BIS standards, and both domestic and foreign manufacturers must obtain a BIS license. The QCO enforces the supply of only high-quality products. Additionally, the government is developing a strategy to enhance the steel sector’s competitiveness and sustainability globally. A Working Group has been formed to create India’s Steel Global Outlook Strategy, focusing on raw materials, investments, and cooperation with priority countries. A Strategy Paper will outline action plans after stakeholder consultations.
