To achieve net zero emissions by 2050, the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology (MTCIT) plans to establish ship recycling and dismantling yards using advanced green technologies, Muscat Daily reports.
Ship recycling, also known as ship breaking or dismantling, involves extracting reusable parts and materials, mainly scrap metal, from ships. These new facilities will support Oman’s sustainability goals by adhering to modern environmental standards.
Mahna Musa bin Baqer, Director General of Ports at MTCIT, emphasized the ministry’s role in overseeing ports and maritime operations, ensuring they meet international security standards. The ministry aims to boost the operational efficiency of Omani ports, which have made significant progress in recent years. A key priority is creating ship recycling centers that use green technologies. An economic feasibility study is underway to support this initiative, highlighting Oman’s commitment to sustainable maritime practices. Additionally, the ministry is focused on developing the ports of Shannah and Masirah, with a public auction planned to involve the private sector in their management and operation.
