    Salzgitter Flachstahl upgrades blast furnace

SMS has successfully completed the commissioning of a new Paul Wurth Parallel Hopper Bell Less Top (BLT) in blast furnace A at Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH. This upgrade involved replacing the outdated BLT system from 1977 with a new Paul Wurth Parallel Hopper Bell Less Top, featuring various technical and operational improvements.

The new design offers enhanced maintenance options with improved access and dismantling aids, resulting in significantly reduced maintenance time. To boost operational efficiency, the modernization of the top charging system included overhauling and integrating key components such as the spherical maintenance valve, valve actuator, material hopper, and distribution rocker. Additionally, a new primary equalizing system with reconfigured pipework, valves, silencer, and a state-of-the-art hydraulic and greasing station was installed, supplied in a turnkey container.

The installation of a new silencer has substantially reduced sound emissions, contributing to more environmentally friendly operation. Simplification of the equalizing system’s piping has streamlined the process, while the new construction promotes sustainability by producing less dust and emitting fewer blast furnace gases into the atmosphere.

Furthermore, the newly constructed hydraulic room offers increased space, better access, and an optimized system layout across a 50-square-meter area, further facilitating maintenance and operational tasks.
