DGTR recommends extension of countervailing tariffs on welded stainless pipes

The Indian commerce ministry’s investigation arm, the Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR), has recommended continuing countervailing or anti-subsidy duties on welded stainless steel pipes and tubes from China and Vietnam to protect domestic manufacturers.

In a notification, the DGTR stated that the removal of the current countervailing duty on imports from these two countries would likely harm the domestic industry. The authority concluded that the duty on these goods needs to be extended further. The DGTR recommended extending the countervailing duties on the imports of the specified products.

The directorate has suggested a duty of up to 29.88pct on these products. The final decision to impose this duty will be made by the finance ministry.

Domestic players had filed an application in July 2023, requesting the initiation of a sunset review of the previously imposed anti-subsidy duties and seeking the continuation of these duties on imports of welded stainless steel tubes and pipes from China and Vietnam.
