Vietnam imported 1.2 mln tons of HRC in September, marking a 34pct increase from August, according to the General Department of Customs. This amount represents 220pct of the country’s domestic production, which was recorded at 568,000 tons.
In the first nine months of 2024, Vietnam’s HRC imports totaled nearly 8.8 mln tons, a 26pct YoY increase, equivalent to 171pct of domestic production. Notably, imports from China made up 72pct of the total, or 6.3 mln tons, significantly exceeding domestic manufacturers’ consumption of 5.1 mln tons.
The surge in Chinee steel imports has continued despite an ongoing anti-dumping investigation. In July, the Ministry of Industry and Trade initiated an inquiry into imports of HRC from China and India at the request of local steel producers Hoa Phat and Formosa Ha Tinh Steel.
