Arab Steel Summit highlights industry challenges and strategic growth opportunities

During the 17th Arab Steel Summit and International Iron and Steel Exhibition in Qatar, Minister of State for Energy Affairs Saad Sherida Al Kaabi emphasized the need to position the Arab iron and steel industry on the global map and create favorable regulatory and investment conditions for growth and competitiveness. He highlighted challenges such as geopolitical crises affecting the steel industry’s development.

Despite strong regional demand driven by infrastructure projects and a robust real estate market, Arab countries produce only about 40 mln tons of iron and steel annually, compared to a global production of around two bln tons. Al Kaabi stressed the importance of balancing economic, social, and environmental goals, particularly in reducing the carbon footprint, which is vital for sustainability strategies.

The summit, organized by the Arab Iron and Steel Union (AISU) and supported by media partner MEsteel, was themed “The Future of the Iron and Steel Industry in the Arab World”, attracting over 500 participants and 40 exhibitors. Chairman Awwad Al Khaldi expressed hopes for fruitful collaboration, while Secretary-General Dr. Kamel Djoudi underscored the summit’s role in addressing significant challenges and promoting sustainability and innovation in the sector. Key discussions focused on economic challenges, new technologies for efficiency, and fostering cross-border partnerships for growth.
