Marcegaglia Stainless to modernize Sheffield mill to boost capacity

Marcegaglia Stainless Sheffield, located in the UK, has partnered with Primetals Technologies to optimize production at its Sheffield minimill. The modernization project aims to double the plant’s annual capacity from 250,000 to 500,000 tons. The upgrade will include intralogistics systems, process optimization solutions, and intelligent sensor systems across the meltshop, scrap yard, and ladle tracking systems.

This project is based on a Through-Process Optimization (TPO) study by Primetals Technologies, which identified bottlenecks and recommended improvements. As a result, Marcegaglia chose Primetals for this automation overhaul and the upcoming electric arc furnace revamp.

The first step includes installing Melt Expert, a fully automated electrode control system for the electric arc and ladle furnaces. Mid-term plans involve implementing process optimization software for the electric arc furnace, AOD, and ladle furnace plants, with long-term plans to replace the electric arc furnace for increased capacity.

The scope includes the Scrap Yard Supervisor for cost-optimized scrap recipes, intelligent sensors for monitoring process deviations, and optimization solutions like EAF Optimizer, AOD Optimizer, and LF Optimizer for better product quality and reduced costs.

Marcegaglia Stainless Sheffield is a global leader in long stainless steel products, known for producing high-quality, sustainable products with over 90pct recycled content and a lower carbon footprint than industry averages.
