Libya aims to establish itself as a direct reduced iron (DRI) supplier in the Mediterranean and beyond with plans for a new DRI complex in the Benghazi region, featuring Midrex Flex technology.
Tosyali Sulb Steel Industries, a joint venture between Tosyali and Libya United Steel Company for Iron & Steel Industry (Sulb), will lead the project, beginning with the construction of a 2.5 mln-ton cold DRI plant.
The facility will utilize Midrex technology, similar to the two DRI plants operated by Tosyali Algerie in Algeria. With Midrex Flex, the plant will initially run on natural gas and later transition to hydrogen, aligning with green steel production goals. Once operational, the Libyan plant will supply cold DRI to the surrounding region, positioning Tosyali Sulb as a key global DRI supplier.
The project will be delivered by Midrex Technologies and consortium partner Paul Wurth, part of SMS Group, both of which previously supplied DRI plants for Tosyali Algerie.
