SAIL invests in advanced hot-blast stove for IISCO steel plant expansion

Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has awarded a contract to Primetals Technologies to design, supply, and install a new hot-blast stove for blast furnace No. 5, ‘Kalyani,’ at the IISCO steel plant in Burnpur, Asansol, West Bengal, India. This addition will enable IISCO to maintain production efficiency while enhancing operational capabilities.

The fourth stove will allow IISCO to repair existing stoves without affecting production or efficiency. Implementation is set for 17 months from the contract signing. The new stove will feature innovative internal-combustion technology, including a “mushroom dome” for a longer lifespan and a vertical ceramic burner for efficient combustion.

Primetals Technologies will handle the design, engineering, manufacturing, and construction of the stove shell, along with supplying high-grade refractories, expansion joints, hydraulic systems, and valves. The hot-blast mains will be extended to integrate the fourth stove.

SAIL, one of India’s largest steelmakers, operates five integrated plants and three special steel plants, primarily in eastern and central India. The IISCO Steel Plant, a SAIL unit, is one of India’s oldest integrated steel plants, with a current capacity of 2.5 mln tons per year, set to increase by an additional four mln tons annually. The plant produces a range of wire rod, bar, and section products from its three rolling mills.
