Posco aims to increase steel supply for hyperloop projects

Posco is increasing its steel supply for the world’s first hyperloop facility, following the successful test of Hardt Hyperloop’s vehicle at the European Hyperloop Center (EHC) in Veendam, the Korean steelmaker announced in a press release.

Posco has supplied 352 tons of PosLoop 355 steel, the world’s first specialized steel for hyperloop tubes. PosLoop 355 has 1.7 times higher vibration absorption than standard steel and offers superior seismic performance, enhancing overall stability, the company said.

The hyperloop tubes, developed and produced by Posco in collaboration with Tata Steel Netherlands, were pre-fabricated by contractor Mercon and installed by infrastructure company Denys. All companies are partners in the Hyperloop Development Program, according to Hardt Hyperloop.

Phase B of the Hardt Hyperloop project, involving an additional 2.7-kilometer tube, is set for completion by 2027. This phase will allow the hyperloop to reach speeds of up to 700 kilometers per hour, moving it closer to commercialization. Posco has agreed to continue supplying its specialized steel for the new test tube.

Posco’s collaboration with Hardt began in 2022 when Posco International acquired a 6.1pct stake in the company through an investment, securing rights to supply steel for the project. In 2023, Posco signed an agreement with Hardt to cooperate not only on Phase B but also on future hyperloop projects across Europe and the Middle East.
