BlueScope partners with Helios to pilot low-carbon iron production technology

Australian steel producer BlueScope Steel, through its subsidiary BlueScopeX Pty Ltd, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Helios Project Ltd., the developer of the Helios Cycle, a novel process that uses sodium as a reducing agent to produce iron and other metals with lower energy consumption and zero direct carbon emissions.

The MoU aims to explore the use of Helios Green Iron (HGI) in parts of BlueScope’s steelmaking operations. The collaboration will begin with a pilot project in 2026, where Helios will supply HGI produced using its proprietary technology at pilot plants.
