Energiekontor AG, a leading German project developer of wind and solar parks, and Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH have signed long-term power supply contracts for two solar park projects in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Energiekontor plans to add these projects to its portfolio upon commissioning, with construction now set to begin following the receipt of building permits and financial closure.
The two solar parks will have a total generation capacity of approximately 113 megawatt peak, with commissioning expected by mid-2026. The initial 15-year power purchase agreements (PPAs) will supply Salzgitter Flachstahl with over 120 gigawatt hours of green electricity annually, potentially reducing CO2 emissions by nearly 84,000 tons each year. The contracts, developed in collaboration with Pexapark, provide planning security for both companies and support Germany’s industrial decarbonization efforts. Through its SALCOS (Salzgitter Low CO2 Steelmaking) transformation program, Salzgitter aims to achieve climate-neutral steel production by utilizing green electricity to produce hydrogen, which will replace coal in conventional blast furnaces, significantly reducing CO2 emissions by 95pct.
