Posco to modernize LD converter at Pohang plant

South Korean steel producer Posco has selected Primetals Technologies to supply a new tilting drive for LD converter (BOF) No. 3-2 at its Pohang plant, which began operation in June 2024. Primetals handled engineering, manufacturing, equipment supply, advisory services, and personnel training.

The tilting drive was manufactured, tested, and inspected at Primetals’ Milan workshop before being shipped as a single 110-ton piece from Genoa to South Korea, significantly reducing on-site assembly time.

This new drive features an optimized gear-tooth profile, hardened gears, and increased housing stiffness, enabling higher torque and reduced maintenance needs, while extending equipment lifespan. Primetals also installed pneumatic emergency drives to ensure continuous operation during power outages.

With an annual capacity of 42 mln tons, Posco exports a diverse range of steel products, including hot-rolled steel, plates, wire rods, cold-rolled steel, galvanized steel, and stainless steel, globally.
