Spain’s Hydnum Steel, the first green steel plant on the Iberian Peninsula, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Knauf Interfer, a leading European steel processing and distribution company. This partnership aims to enhance the supply of emission-free green steel in Europe, promoting a more efficient and environmentally friendly value chain.
As part of the agreement, Knauf Interfer will purchase green steel from Hydnum, valued at approximately USD 89 mln annually. They will also establish a green steel supply network utilizing Knauf Interfer’s logistics hub in Duisburg, Germany, optimizing deliveries to Central European markets.
The collaboration may extend to steel product processing, with Knauf Interfer providing cutting, segmentation, and re-coiling services for Hydnum’s customers, along with transparency on their steel CO2 footprint through an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) approach.
Both companies plan to create a circular economy system to recycle ferrous scrap, allowing scrap from Knauf Interfer’s network to be processed at Hydnum Steel’s Puertollano plant, effectively closing the production loop.
Headquartered in Duisburg, Knauf Interfer is a prominent independent service provider and distributor of steel and aluminum in Europe, known for its agile decision-making and extensive international supplier network.
Hydnum Steel aims to commence construction of its Puertollano plant in 2025, targeting an initial production capacity of 1.5 mln tons of flat-rolled steel per year, with plans to expand to 2.6 mln tons in future phases.
