SSAB and Norway’s Smith Stal have signed a letter of intent for future deliveries of fossil-free steel. Smith Stal is a major distributor of value-added steels and metals in Norway, offering a comprehensive range of products, including plates, beams, hollow sections, pipes, and bars.
Traditional steel production significantly contributes to global CO2 emissions. To address this, SSAB aims to reduce emissions and establish a fossil-free value chain with its customers and partners.
SSAB has developed two innovative steels with nearly zero fossil carbon emissions: SSAB Zero and SSAB fossil-free steel. SSAB Zero is made from recycled steel and produced using fossil-free electricity and biogas, available for commercial deliveries since 2023. SSAB fossil-free steel, created with the unique HYBRIT technology developed in collaboration with LKAB and Vattenfall, uses hydrogen produced from fossil-free electricity instead of coal to remove oxygen from iron ore, resulting in water emissions instead of CO2. This product is currently available for pilot deliveries to select partners.
