Greensteel Australia has partnered with Danieli to establish a 600,000-ton-per-year rolling mill powered entirely by green hydrogen in New South Wales.
This groundbreaking facility aims to set a global benchmark for zero-emissions steel production, with operations expected to commence by late 2026, Danieli said in a press release.
Steel production, while essential for economic growth, contributes 8pct of global CO2 emissions and is one of the most carbon-intensive industries. The International Energy Agency states that emissions from steelmaking must decrease by 50pct by 2050 to meet climate goals, Danieli added.
The mill will utilize a reheating furnace powered by 100pct green hydrogen, eliminating NOx emissions and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Designed for the Australian construction market, it will produce rebar in diameters from 10 to 50 mm and spooled coils from 8 to 32 mm.
Under the agreement, Danieli will provide materials, technology, and expertise, drawing on its experience with over 500 rolling mills. The facility will feature Danieli’s sixth-generation horizontal billet welding technology, enabling endless rolling and continuous material flow through 14 housingless rolling stands. Additionally, the mill will incorporate advanced automation, overhead cranes, water treatment systems, compressed air plants, and a fully equipped roll shop to optimize efficiency and safety while minimizing downtime.
