Swedish steel producer, SSAB’s subsidiary Tibnor will supply SSAB Zero steel made from recycled materials to Salthammer Batbyggeri AS in Norway. This marks the first delivery of SSAB Zero to the shipbuilding industry, as announced in a press release.
SSAB Zero is produced with fossil-free electricity and biogas, resulting in steel with virtually no fossil carbon emissions. Tibnor will deliver around 300 tons of SSAB Zero in two batches to Salthammer, which is building two electric-powered supply ships for AQS Rederi AS, a Norwegian shipping services company. These Coastern 28eH ships, designed for fish farming, will be equipped with large battery packs (2000 kWh and 1600 kWh), enabling continuous electric operation.
The ships are designed for energy efficiency and flexibility, with electric propulsion, large cranes, and a bollard pull of over 25 tons. They will be delivered in Q4 2025 and Q2 2026, focusing on minimizing noise and providing comfortable crew accommodations.
SSAB Zero steel production results in near-zero fossil emissions, without relying on carbon offsetting or emission reductions through mass balancing. Salthammer Batbyggeri AS, a shipbuilding company founded in 1896, and AQS Rederi AS, which operates 16 modern vessels for the Norwegian fish farming industry, are collaborating on this project.
Tibnor is the leading distributor of steel, non-ferrous metals and processing services in the Nordics. Tibnor buys and sells materials produced both by SSAB and other suppliers, and plays an important role in securing SSAB’s leadership in the Nordic home market. The company has three processing units in Finland, five in Sweden, three in Norway, as well as units in Denmark and Lithuania.
