SSAB to install one of world’s largest EAFs in Oxelosund for carbon-neutral production

Swedish steel producer, SSAB has chosen SMS group to construct a 190-ton electric arc furnace (EAF) in Oxelosund, which is set to be one of the largest installations in the world with an upper shell diameter of 9.3 meters.

The furnace, slated for its first heat in Q4 2026, will play a key role in SSAB’s fossil-free production transition and is expected to reduce Sweden’s total CO2 emissions by 3pct.

The EAF will be powered by a 280 MVA transformer and requires advanced technology to meet grid authority standards for flicker, power factor, and harmonic distortion. As part of the project, SSAB has selected SMS group to integrate a direct feed (DF) system from GE Vernova. This modular multilevel converter (MMC) based system, built on injection-enhanced gate transistor (IEGT) technology, ensures the EAF operates smoothly, efficiently, and without disrupting the grid, helping to further reduce CO2 emissions.
