SSAB has secured approval from the Land and Environmental Court in Umea to build and operate a mini-mill in Lulea, Sweden, which will replace its current steel plant. This move will facilitate a technology shift with significant environmental and climate benefits, while meeting growing demand for SSAB’s unique steel products and strengthening its future competitiveness.
The new mini-mill, featuring electric arc furnaces and rolling complexes, will replace the blast furnace-based production system once fully operational. The investment will solidify SSAB’s leadership in the green steel transition, focusing on special and premium steels with nearly zero fossil carbon emissions.
Detailed engineering and building permit processes are now underway, SSAB said.
The mini-mill will run on fossil-free electricity and use fossil-free sponge iron produced via HYBRIT technology and recycled scrap. The transformation is expected to cut 2.8 mln tons of CO2 emissions annually, contributing to a 10pct reduction in Sweden’s total emissions, with 7pct from Lulea and 3pct from Oxelosund.
