ArcelorMittal has achieved the first heat under the SteelUp! modernization project at its Belval site in Luxembourg, marking a major milestone in the upgrade of the facility’s steelmaking operations.
The SteelUp! project, executed by Sarralle, is a comprehensive brownfield modernization aimed at strengthening the long-term competitiveness of the Belval plant. The upgrade is designed to enable more efficient, flexible and sustainable steel production, in line with ArcelorMittal’s strategy to future-proof its European operations.
A key objective of the project is to allow self-sufficient production of high-quality steel for the long products market, particularly to supply the Rodange rolling mills, reducing reliance on semi-finished steel from German blast furnace sites.
The scope of the modernization includes a new 155-ton DC electric arc furnace, upgraded fume extraction and material handling systems, a new 145-ton vacuum degasser, enhancements to the continuous casting machine, and upgrades to the water treatment plant. The new EAF incorporates Sarralle safety technologies such as an automatic slag door, EBT sand feeding, emergency opening and EBT cleaning systems.
