Gensol Engineering has partnered with Matrix Gas & Renewables to develop India’s first and largest green steel production facility, using 100pct green hydrogen. This facility is part of three pilot projects under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, sanctioned by MECON in collaboration with the Ministry of Steel and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, showcasing a significant leap in sustainable steel production.
The project’s estimated capital expenditure is INR 321 crore (USD 38 mln), with the Indian government covering 50pct of the cost. The facility will employ direct reduced iron (DRI) vertical shaft technology, using green hydrogen instead of fossil fuels to produce sponge iron, eliminating CO2 emissions. The plant will support Matrix’s broader vision of expanding green steel production in regions like Chhattisgarh and Odisha.
The pilot plant, with a capacity of 50 tons per day, will be developed in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar and Metsol AB (Sweden). Matrix will manage the entire project, including land acquisition, design, procurement, and installation, along with supporting infrastructure.
