Masteel partners with Kelington and UTAR to advance carbon capture initiatives

Malaysia Steel Works (KL) Bhd (Masteel) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Ace Gases Marketing Sdn. Bhd., a subsidiary of Kelington Group Berhad, and Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) to advance carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technologies at its ultra-low carbon steel facility.

Under the MoU, the parties will jointly carry out a feasibility study to identify the most effective CO2 capture technologies for steel production and explore options for CO2 utilization or storage. Masteel will contribute operational insights and plant infrastructure, Kelington, via Ace Gases, will provide technical expertise, and UTAR will support with academic research and analysis.

The project will help Masteel reduce its carbon footprint, support sustainable steel production, and potentially participate in the Voluntary Carbon Market (VCM) by generating and trading Verified Carbon Units (VCUs). Future phases will focus on energy optimization, operational efficiency, and monetization of captured CO2.

Masteel is among Malaysia’s top five integrated steelmakers, producing billets, high-tensile deformed bars and mild steel round bars.
