ADI completes major upgrade at cold rolling mill in Genoa

SMS group has successfully modernized the rotary mandrel in the tandem cold rolling mill at Acciaierie d’Italia (ADI) in Genoa, Italy. The mill, unique in Italy, produces around 1.5 mln tons annually of tinplate and electrolytic chrome-coated strip, primarily for the food processing industry.

After 15 years of continuous operation, the upgrade focused on addressing severe wear, particularly on the spherical plain bearings. SMS replaced critical components including hollow shafts, spur gears, bearing shafts, and support rollers to restore performance and ensure long-term reliability.

A proactive, on-site repair approach minimized downtime and delivered significant cost savings for ADI. Thanks to 24-hour operations during the project, production resumed swiftly with minimal disruption.

Since 2019, SMS has carried out regular inspections of the rotary mandrel. In 2022, early detection of bearing wear allowed ADI to prepare spare parts in advance and coordinate the maintenance efficiently.

The rotor replacement, involving a four-meter-wide, 55-ton unit, was a complex task. Advanced technologies, such as induction heating and hydraulic tightening systems up to M80, were used to install a 900 mm spherical plain bearing, ensuring precision and durability for future operations.
