Algoma Steel has achieved first steel production at Unit One of its new Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) facility in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. This marks the start of the company’s transition from integrated to electric arc steelmaking, the first full-scale transformation of its kind globally.
The facility features two Danieli Digimelter EAFs, each with a 250-ton capacity and powered by Q-One digital power systems delivering more than 150 MVA. Designed to produce 3.7 mln tons of liquid steel annually, the new melt shop also includes a twin-tank vacuum degasser and two ladle furnaces, enabling production of high-grade coil and plate steel.
By adopting Danieli technologies, Algoma expects to cut carbon emissions by about 70pct. Ontario’s clean power grid further positions the company as a leading North American green steel producer.
The plant incorporates advanced automation, energy efficiency, fume treatment, and water conservation systems to boost both environmental and operational performance.
