British Steel to supply rails for Ankara-Izmir high-speed line

British Steel has secured a major eight-figure rail supply contract for a high-speed electric railway project in Turkey, supported by UK Export Finance.

Under the agreement, British Steel will supply 36,000 tons of rail to ERG International Group, which is delivering the project on behalf of the Turkish government. The 599-km Ankara-Izmir high-speed line, to be operated by Turkish State Railways, is expected to significantly cut journey times and lower transport-related emissions by shifting traffic to electric rail.

The contract has led to the creation of 23 new jobs and prompted British Steel to restart 24/7 rail manufacturing at its Scunthorpe works for the first time in more than a decade. Deliveries will take place throughout 2026 and will comprise 60E2 rail in 36-metre lengths.

British Steel said it has previously supplied rail into Turkey through ERG for earlier phases of the Ankara-Izmir project, with the latest order reinforcing its position in the international rail infrastructure market.
