Celsa Barcelona has successfully commissioned a Condoor automatic slag door system on EAF #2 at its steelmaking plant, marking the second installation supplied by SMS group at the site. The collaboration between the two companies began in 2021 with the aim of improving energy efficiency, reducing CO2 and NOx emissions, and advancing automation in the electric arc furnace (EAF) process.
The first Condoor system installed on EAF #1 demonstrated strong performance, leading Celsa to implement the same technology on EAF #2. The automated system eliminates the need for operators on the furnace platform through fully automated slag-tunnel cleaning. A hydraulic pusher precisely controls the deslagging process, making operations faster and safer while significantly reducing cleaning cycle times. The uniform setup across both furnaces also simplifies training, maintenance, and spare parts management.
Beyond operational gains, the system supports Celsa’s safety and sustainability goals by removing manual intervention at the slag door and reducing gas and oxygen consumption.
Celsa Group operates around 7.5 mln tons per year of steelmaking capacity and produces a wide range of long steel products, including rebar, wire rod, and structural steel products. Celsa Barcelona is the group’s flagship facility and the largest circular steel production center in Europe with an annual crude steel capacity of 2.5 mln tons.
