Celsa boosts Bayonne wire rod mill performance with finishing-end upgrade

Celsa France has successfully upgraded the finishing end of its Bayonne wire rod mill, following the completion of a modernization project by Primetals Technologies. The upgrade replaced the existing finishing block and reform station, resolving persistent downtime issues caused by earlier third-party equipment and significantly improving mill performance and reliability.

The modernization introduced a new 10-stand Morgan Vee No-Twist Mill with a 3-Hi speed increaser gearbox and a 1,200 mm reform tub. The upgraded setup allows stable, high-speed operation of up to 105 meters per second across low-, medium-, and high-carbon steel grades, increasing productivity while reducing maintenance costs and roll change times.

A newly designed ring distributor within the reform tub minimizes coil height and prevents tangling, ensuring smoother downstream processing and reduced delays.

Part of Europe’s largest circular steel supply chain, Celsa Group is a leading producer of low-emission, recycled steel for the construction, automotive, energy, and oil and gas sectors. The company operates electric arc furnaces to manufacture a wide range of products, including wire rod, merchant bars, rebar, and structural sections.
